Character Personality:Chloe is nice. Too nice. Not in the way that people feel that she's fake, but she can come off as naïve and young, which goes along with the way she looks fairly well. The truth is: it's because Chloe is naïve and young, but she also genuinely cares about people. Even if they've thoroughly pissed her off, even if they've tried to kill her by hitting her in the head with a rock and left her in a dark crawl space or if they have betrayed her--as is the case with both her friend Rae and her Aunt Lauren--, she has a large capacity for forgiveness and for caring. She tries to not word things too harshly, when others would be blunt and not care about how they came off. At first, this is a huge part of her being the “good” girl: compliant and well-mannered. Later, when she decides to shrug off being good, it's just part of who she is, and she can't actually change it. While she realizes that it's okay to let herself get fierce, especially when protecting her friends, she's comfortable being the nice one.
That's not to say that she is completely a welcome mat or anything. She knows how to stand up for herself, and she does it very well. When Derek begins to climb down her throat every time he finds fault with something that she does, she doesn't let him scare her—a huge feat for people who are naturally afraid of a tall, big werewolf. In fact, he comes to respect her for not cowering in fear when he barks. She'll even play at manipulation, if she knows it's going to help herself and her friends. The things she does tends to be in favor of helping her friends out, whether it's jumping into a fight and stabbing a werewolf in the leg, or walking into the woods alone at night to see if there are people with guns stalking the perimeter. As the series goes on, Chloe becomes more bold and protective. She's seen too much, been in too many near-death experiences to continue hiding meekly like she did at the beginning.
Just like any other teenage girl out there, Chloe is a bit insecure about herself. Despite her age, she looks like she's twelve, and it bothers her. She's short and small and people often overlook her because of it. Her father's aloofness in her life, the basic fact that she knows that he never wanted her but had her because her mother did, makes her a little lonely. She's not mad at him for it, and because of the person she is, she understands and forgives him. It's not like he doesn't love her; he just doesn't know what it is that he's supposed to do with her. It also doesn't help that she has something of a stutter, although it only presents itself usually when she's lying. She's a horrible liar, and therefore adds to her goody-good nature.
Chloe's necromancy is a big part of her now-life. It began when she was young of course, leading to her almost crippling fear of the dark that she has now. Beyond that, when she first begins to see the spirits again, it leads her to have a complete meltdown. She honestly believes what the doctors tell her when she ends up in the group home: that she has schizophrenia, that she is crazy. Only crazy people would see dead people or hear them talking to her. She eventually embraces that part of her, although she is incredibly terrified: not only of what she is capable of doing, but of how powerful she honestly is. It worries her, that she can attract things others can't. Another worry for her is that necromancers tend to end up going insane, and she is more powerful than any other. How long will she last? She also feels guilty whenever she forces a spirit back into its corpse. The spirits don't wish to return and are usually violent, but they are forced to listen to the commands of their master. She always apologizes when she's done, however, and sends them on their way with the hope that they will move on.
She recognizes that her power is the most useless in a group of two spellcasters, a poltergeist, and a brooding werewolf. She's weak and small, but she is also the least threatening, which is something that she uses to her advantage when she needs to. Nobody is going to suspect the small, cute, well-mannered girl to suddenly bring a dead body back to life to protect herself.
And there's the filmmaker aspect of herself. For as long as she can remember, Chloe has wanted to be a director and a screenwriter. She convinces her dad to send her to an art school, she knows most every movie and can talk about plots all day long. It's also her coping mechanism. When she's scared or unsure, she begins to change the things in her life into a movie script. It helps her to calm down and concentrate by making them into a movie rather than succumbing the horror of the real life situation.
Character Abilities:Chloe is a born necromancer. What does this entail, you ask? Basically, Chloe can communicate with the dead. She can see spirits, talk to them, send them on to the other side, banish them, etc. This would likely be the extent of her abilities after years of study and practice, of course, if the Edison Group hadn't experimented on Chloe's DNA prior to birth. They were meant to dampen her abilities; instead, they genetically enhanced her. Because of the experiments and enhancement, Chloe may very well be the most powerful necromancer to exist.
Along with her abilities to talk to the dead, she can force spirits back into their dead bodies, regardless of the state of the corpse or species of the corpse. She can raise humans and animals alike. Unfortunately, she's untrained, and sometimes her powers work without her trying. She might summon a zombie in her sleep without meaning to, or try to release a spirit and end up nearly possessed. She isn't limited on one spirit at a time. Chloe is fully capable of sending nearly a thousand spirits flying back to their bodies and creating an army from them, simply because she was concentrating too hard on summoning the spirit of her friend.
Oh, and she was also able to release a demi-demon from her chains. Girl be fierce.
That aside, because of her enormous powers, Chloe's light – sort of like her aura that ghosts can recognize that she's a necromancer meant to help them – is brighter than any necromancer, therefore attracting more moths to the flame. Because of this, Chloe's mother gave her an amulet to wear that helps to suppress her “light”. Without it, she'd eventually go insane.
Character History:Summary of The SummoningSummary of The AwakeningSummary of The Reckoning:
After arriving at Andrew's safehouse, Chloe discovers the poltergeist of a former Genesis Project member, who attempts to push her from the roof. Derek warns her to not follow after ghosts she doesn't know.
The group meets with Andrew's friends later the next day, all of whom are meant to help train the kids. Except for Derek, as there is no werewolf in the group. However, the adults of this group are incredibly wary of the kids, and some feel the need to kill them or turn them in. This is exasperated later, after one of the mentors takes Chloe to a cemetery. Chloe tells Margaret that she can't be here because of her abilities, but she's not believed since only powerful necromancers with years of study can perform forcing a spirit back into its body. Tori attempts to back Chloe up, but their warning go ignored. By accident, Chloe not only summons dozens of ghost, but nearly raises the dead again, terrifying everyone in the cemetery. Terrified, Margaret brings the girls back to the house and tells Andrew of her fears.
Simon, Derek, and Chloe decide to investigate the ghost haunting the house, after a few more run-ins that Chloe has, including her experimenting with removing her protective amulet. They find that the original doctor of the original Project Genesis was insane, and he attempts to possess Chloe and take her over. She's able to not only force him out of her body, but to banish him as well. She is also able to hear her mother attempting to speak to her.
Simon asks Chloe on a date, to help relieve her of the stress happening in their lives. She agrees. On their way back, he kisses her, and she's at a loss of what to do because she realizes that the kiss doesn't feel right. She likes Simon, but something's wrong, and that's when they fight. Simon tells her that she's in love with Derek. She denies it, but as she's walking back to the house, she realizes that he might be right. Derek finds her and demands to know what's happened. They fight when he figures out that she's attempting to tell him that she likes him.
Despite being angry at Derek, Chloe goes with him into the woods when he tells her that he can feel the change coming on. She knows he needs her and doesn't want to let their fight get in the way of that. She stays with him like usual, and this time Derek finally makes the whole Change. They test out his abilities, as this is the first time he's ever become a wolf. The fun and games end, however, when Derek smells Liam and Ramon. Ramon changes into a wolf, and him and Derek fight, with Derek coming out the victor. Before he can fight Liam, Derek begins to change back. Chloe realizes that he's too vulnerable and goes to distract the angry werewolf, even though there isn't much she can honestly do. She raises a few zombie animals and pits them against Liam. When it seems like that isn't enough and he's about to attack Chloe, Derek arrives and snaps Liam's neck. With her necromancy, Chloe is able to talk to Liam's ghost and find out who hired him to kill both her and Derek. It turns out that one of the men that was supposedly Andrew's friend.
They don't trust these people any longer, and the group begins to investigate them, quickly finding out that Andrew has been keeping Simon and Derek from their father and lying to them. They're kept under a careful watch, never allowed to be alone together for too long. Despite that, they're able to plan an escape. Unfortunately, they learn that people are staked out around the perimeter. Instead, they have Derek hide out to pretend that he got away. It's soon discovered that Russell and Margaret have killed Andrew and another woman watching out for them. She drugs Chloe, Tori, and Simon, and they are taking back to the Edison Group's lab.
Tori's mother kills a guard and blames it on her daughter, ordering that she is too dangerous to be allowed to live. While locked up in her room again, Chloe contacts the demi-demon who had previously made her a deal. She releases the demon, thereby destroying the power the lab had. The demon takes over the body of the dead guard and they go about trying to release people. Chloe is confronted by a full demon who takes interest in her. The demi-demon ends up being taken away, and Chloe is on her own. However, she finds her aunt, who is still alive, and they find the others. Derek appears, fully Changed, after Liz has led him to the building. After he Changes back, the group—including Simon and Derek's dad, Kit—are faced with Tori's mom and Dr. Davidoff. Tori's mom is killed, and Chloe forces her spirit back into her body and uses her as a weapon to kill Dr. Davidoff.
They run off after that, keeping together. The book ends with Derek and Chloe kissing.
